Obscure place names are part of the charm of England.
Much Hoole is a small town between Preston and Southport in the northwest of England. What ‘Hoole’ is and why much has been made of it has never been clear to me, nor to people of my acquaintance who live thereabouts. There isn’t much there beyond two pubs and the Village Tandoori. Hard by Much Hoole there is Little Hoole, which is much smaller still. So small it is hard to find without asking. But there it has been since 1256, which is not saying that much by English standards.
