That’s Endeavour with a ‘u’, if you please.

Two thoughts struck me as I watched the Space Shuttle Endeavour crawl through Los Angeles today.  The first was just the plain awesomeness of the incongruity – the space shuttle, inching earthbound along the streets of LA. The second was about a detail – why the letter ‘u’ in its name?

According to the NASA website that Google found in a flash, it was named after Captain James Cook’s ship, Endeavour, that sailed from England to the South Pacific in 1769 to observe and record the rare event of the transit of Venus. It was a British Royal Navy ship, hence the English spelling – colour, flavour, favour, humour, endeavour, etc.
